The BFRC Energy Rating Scheme
The British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) developed the Window Energy Rating (WER) scheme to assess the energy efficiency of windows in the UK. The WER scheme rates windows based on their insulating properties, assigning a rating from G to A, with G being the least efficient. These ratings are displayed using the ‘rainbow scale’, a consumer-friendly system like those found on white goods.
Companies seeking to obtain their own WER must comply with BFRC procedures, ensuring a quality management system is in place. They must also undergo an assessment by an independent agency that verifies the accuracy of any simulations and confirms the window meets BFRC requirements.
Once the assessment is complete, the results are forwarded to the BFRC, which issues WER labels and lists the company and its products on the BFRC website. Any product changes will require a new assessment, and WER labels must be renewed annually.
